The Windansea Surf Club was the most powerful organization in surfing for a few years in the sixties and up until the advent of pro surfing. With a majority of the top surfers in California, the leadership of ambitious President Chuck Hasley, and the financial acumen, publicity savvy and will to win of executive director/stockbroker Tor Svenson, (known to the members as Thor!), the La Jolla based offspring of the old Windansea Gang romped through club and individual contests and paddle events. The bus rides to Malibu, the trips to Hawai’i and Australia were legendary parties that sometimes eclipsed the contests held in marginal slop. It is the bus rides and Windansea’s no-holds-barred take on the surfers party that will be remembered about this club, still going strong in 2006.
